What to expect
We'll begin by exploring what a quilt is, where the tradition comes from and how quilts have been used to tell stories, preserve memories and bring people together. We'll share examples of quilts and samples from our own practices before beginning to develop your sampler.
You'll spend time thinking about the colours, cloth and ideas you'd like to bring into your piece, before being introduced to sewing machines and a range of patchwork techniques by Ana, Daryl and Jess.
On day one, we'll focus on developing and piecing your quilt top.
On day two, we'll layer, quilt and bind your sampler, exploring both machine and hand techniques and the finishing touches that make a quilt your own.
The workshop is relaxed and hands-on, with plenty of time to experiment, ask questions and learn alongside one another.
Lunch break is from 12:30 to 1:30 pm each day.
What will you make
You'll make a small quilt sampler exploring a range of quilting techniques, including half-square triangles, log cabin, hand quilting and binding.
We've chosen to keep the sampler small so you can work with focus and precision rather than rushing to complete a larger piece. It's an opportunity to slow down, experiment with cloth and get to know the foundations of quilting.
Taught by…
Cloth Stories
Ana, Daryl and Jess create and teach workshops rooted in people, history, colour, creativity, place and memory.
They love the connections that happen when our hands are busy and our minds are quiet, and encourage you to bring your own stories, cloths and histories into the room.
Their workshops create a gentle, welcoming space to learn, experiment and make together.
Who is it for
This workshop is for anyone curious about quilting, from complete beginners to those looking to reconnect with a craft they love.
No previous quilting experience is needed. We'll guide you through each step, from choosing your colours and fabrics to patchworking, quilting and binding.
Come alone or bring a friend. Everyone is welcome.
