What to expect
We'll begin by looking at examples of quilted and patchworked heirlooms, exploring different ways of combining colour, pattern, story and cloth.
Together, we'll begin by making a stocking, choosing fabrics and developing a design that feels personal to you. As the weekend unfolds, we'll introduce new shapes and objects to make — perhaps a festive crown, a tree decoration or even a Scandinavian Yule goat.
We'll work through cutting, piecing, quilting and binding, exploring different techniques and finishing details along the way.
The weekend will be gentle, with plenty of time to experiment, ask questions and make alongside one another.
Lunch break is from 12.30–1.30pm.
What you'll make
You'll take home a quilted festive stocking and a small collection of decorations, using a combination of patchwork, quilting and binding techniques.
We'll keep the projects achievable within the weekend while giving you plenty of space to experiment with form, colour and pattern.
The objects you make are intended to become things you bring out year after year and the techniques you'll learn can continue to be called upon.
Taught by…
Cloth Stories
Ana, Daryl and Jess create and teach workshops rooted in people, history, colour, creativity, place and memory.
They love the connections that happen when our hands are busy and our minds are quiet, and encourage you to bring your own stories, cloths and histories into the room.
Their workshops create a gentle, welcoming space to learn, experiment and make together.
Who is it for?
This workshop is for anyone who would like to spend a weekend making special objects to keep and bring out year after year.
Some sewing experience is welcome, but not required. We'll guide you through each stage, from choosing your fabrics and developing your patchwork to quilting and finishing your objects.
If you're familiar with a sewing machine and comfortable with basic sewing, you'll be able to focus on the fun of experimenting with cloth, colour and form.
Come alone or bring a friend. Everyone is welcome.
